At Listers Crisps, we are dedicated to reducing our environmental impact and maintaining sustainable practices throughout every stage of our potato growing and crisp production process.

From the soil to the bag, we strive to be as eco-friendly as possible, supporting both our local community and the planet. Here’s a closer look at the sustainable practices we’ve implemented.

Minimising Food Miles: Local Potatoes, Local Flavour

One of our primary sustainability efforts revolves around minimising food miles. We are proud to grow the key ingredient in our crisps – potatoes – right here on our family farm in Skelton, East Yorkshire. With our crisp factory also located on the same farm, we ensure that our potatoes are as fresh as possible, straight from the field to production. By sourcing locally, we drastically reduce transportation emissions and keep our carbon footprint low.

We don’t just stop at potatoes. We also prioritise sourcing other ingredients and packaging locally, ensuring that every aspect of our production process aligns with our commitment to sustainability.

Reducing Carbon Footprint: Sustainable Packaging and Eco-Friendly Practices

Six flavours of crisps from a sustainable crisps brand: Lightly Sea Salted, Sweet Chilli, Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar, Cheddar Cheese & Onion, Steak, Ale & Caramelised Onion, and Prawn Cocktail, each offering a unique taste experience.

Reducing our carbon footprint is central to our sustainability mission. To this end, we’ve made strides in packaging. We are proud to use fully recyclable materials, and after exploring biodegradable alternatives, we’ve chosen recyclable foil as the most practical solution.

This decision allows us to maintain high-quality packaging while keeping waste to a minimum.

In addition to sustainable packaging, we are committed to responsible farming. Our potato growing practices are certified under the Red Tractor fresh produce standard, ensuring that we follow environmentally friendly practices throughout the entire farming process.

Waste Reduction and Circular Economy: Reprocessing Oil and Crisps

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond production and packaging. We’ve partnered with Brocklesby in East Yorkshire to collect and reprocess oil and waste crisps from our production line. This innovative approach turns waste materials into valuable resources, including renewable energy and even renewable aviation fuel.

We also prioritise recycling and reusing packaging materials whenever possible, ensuring that waste is minimised at every step of the production cycle.

Protecting the Land: Renewable Energy and Fertility

Preserving the health and fertility of our land is critical to us, not just for today but for future generations. We’ve already taken significant steps to ensure that our land remains fertile and healthy by incorporating solar panels on our site. These panels help reduce our reliance on non-renewable energy sources, making our production processes more sustainable.

Looking ahead, we are excited about the future. Over the next 12 months, we plan to install additional solar panels and battery storage systems to further increase our reliance on solar energy. We are also actively exploring the potential for wind energy on the site, which will bring us even closer to meeting our sustainability goals.
